Where I’ve Been

I’m alive, guys! I haven’t been doing much blogging lately because I’ve been focusing on school and work. I’ve also become a little bit more active in the language learning community, so most of my time has been filled up with homework, work, and Chinese! It’s been a really hectic time for me, and in the midst of all of this I’m planning a vacation with my mother. Emphasis onย mother. Anyways, I’m taking a breather just to figure out where I’m at with everything. It’s good to break things down every now and then, right?

My family is going to the Philippines in December. I haven’t been back since 2011, and a lot of ish goes down in 4 years. We’re going back for a wedding! This is a photo from a resort in Bauang, La Union. If you didn’t know, I was born and partly raised in the City of San Fernando, La Union. Which makes me Ilocano (Yeee! Pinakbet!). I’m excited to go back with most of my family, and I’m really looking forward to going back to my old stomping grounds as a kid. The last time I went to the Philippines, I was only in La Union for 1 day. inserts infinite sad faces I’m glad that most of our time will be spent in the province I love the most.

I’m so sad and sleepy, guise. I’ve been spending a lot of my time at our student union’s computer lab. And, sure, I’m on my blog right now (see photo), but most of the time I’m doing these dreadful assignments on an online module. Which, seriously Professor Hater, if I wanted to take an online class I’d take an online class. #STOPLAZYTEACHERS2015

We finished moving, thank the LAWD! Between the three of us, we’d accumulated so much stuff after living at our old place. It’s really the only place Kaien’s ever known. This was the scene on moving day, and it doesn’t even account for the stuff that we had in our rooms. I think this batch was mostly office stuff and shoes. We have too many shoes. We’re about a month settled in at our new place, and we’ve still got 3 boxes of junk left. I think we’re slowly coming to a realization that those boxes are heading to the dumpster.

It’s here โ„โ›„ A photo posted by Shayne (@shayneblogs) on

It snowed. It finally snowed. I think I jinxed it. Sorry, Anchorage. It was a slow drive on the first day of snow, and also the next day, and also this morning, and maybe even tonight. It’s really icy out right now and it took me 45 minutes to get to work, versus the normal 15. We weren’t ready for it! None of us were. It was a crisp fall day the day before it snowed, then BOOM! Snow on a Friday morning! We thought it was going to be a Halloween without snow again, but it wasn’t. I’m hoping this is a sign that winter will actually be more winter like this year. Winter these past few years have been a joke.

Among other things, like I mentioned, I’ve been keeping busy with language learning. I’ve actually signed up for italki, and have become language exchange partners with a few people. I basically just help them with their English questions, and they help me with my Mandarin. It’s a win-win! I’m hoping to become a community tutor eventually so I can use it as a sort of stepping stone to the new direction I’ve embarked on these past couple of months. I’ll let you in on that some other time.

Anyways, what have y’all be up to? Let’s catch up!

*Note: This post contains one referral link. I don’t get paid, but I get credits on italki for language lessons! :))) Help a sista out, plz.

I wasn’t going to include this because it looked tacky, but I recently turned my mother into a Bitmoji and her life hasn’t been the same since.

  1. Yay for a vacation! I’m so excited for you. ๐Ÿ˜€ I haven’t been home since 2012. I’m from Olongapo, but my family moved to Makati when I was 13. I feel like I know so many Ilocanos in the States though? Haha. Every Pinoy I met in Vegas was Ilocano.

    • I think Ilocanos make up like 3/4 of the OFWs in the US haha. That’s a rough estimate at best, but I feel like I run into an Ilocano more than I do any other kind of Filipino. It’s funny you mentioned Vegas though because a lot of my parents’ friends immigrated there, and it seems like even more people are from La Union.

  2. That bitmoji is so cute!!!! Hahahaha!

Excited for you to come back home! It isn’t literally home but, there’s no place like one eh? ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Have a good trip when you do go to the Philippines. It snowed! Texas might get snow next week. I’m hoping not. I don’t like snow too much, but of course Marley will love it <3

    • I can’t imagine living in a place without as much snow as we have up here. I love that we get all four seasons, but I do think winter likes to run its course far too long hahah

  4. Yay you’re going back here after so many years! I’m excited for you! Hope you’ll have a great time here this Christmas!

    • We’ll actually miss Christmas by a few days but my family’s all about New Year’s Eve! But Christmas lasts forever in Philippines anyway! hahaha So it’ll be loads of fun. I haven’t been back to the Philippines for the holiday season in a while. Super excited!

  5. Have fun! I went to the Philippines Dec 2013 and came back to the States January 2014. IT WAS SO FUN!

I too was born in the City of San Fernando… But in Pampanga, making me Kapampangan. My dad, on the other hand, is fluent in Ilocano (and yes he totally makes Pinakbet lol) but is from Pangasinan. ( I’m not sure why he speaks both Ilocano and Pangasinense (Spelling?!))

    • I think a lot of people up north speak Ilocano as a second language, even if they don’t live in Ilocos. It’s like a lingua franca. My dad knows Pangasinense, too! ๐Ÿ™‚ And yay for San Fernandos!!!

  6. Weee you’re going to have a vacation in the Philippines!!! I’m excited for you! ๐Ÿ™‚ I heard La Union has a lot of beautiful spots to visit. And LOL at the Bitmoji HAHAHAHA I can’t

    • Yes! La Union is amazing, I always discover new places within it and it never gets old for me! I’m sure my Bitmoji game is getting old for my mom though, hahaha. I’m just getting on her nerves!

  7. I’m snortling at the Bitmoji.

And boo for work and school, but I totally understand that they ‘d be more of a priority than blogging and such. Sucks to hear that you’re spending a lot of time on schoolwork, but that’s what it is. When I took online classes, I was on the computer practically 24/7 to ensure I never fall behind and to make sure I was on top of things.

But woooooot! So glad you get to do some travelling ๐Ÿ˜€ You’re going to have a blast in the Philippines! ^^

As for that snow . . . send some to me! I’d totally welcome snow in Korea!

    • LOL! My siblings have started calling it a โ€œMomojiโ€ because I flood our group chat with it every day! hahaha

Iโ€™ve found that most of my blogging really goes on during semester breaks, so I guess Iโ€™m just following a pattern. I guess Iโ€™m consistent in blogging that way! Haha, Iโ€™m trying to at least post once a week but itโ€™s gotten hard especially during and after midterms. Iโ€™ll be a sorta full time blogger one day, in a different universe, in a different time haha!

  8. If only I could tag along in your trip to the Philippines! ๐Ÿ™

P.S. That Bitmoji of your mom…priceless! Hahaha!
